Throughout her career, @spaceykacey Kacey Musgraves has used her public platform to challenge social conventions and advocate for marginalized communities. Beyond her music, she has supported LGBTQ+ rights, gun-safety reform, and individuals whose voices are often silenced. Her work challenges conformity, amplifies overlooked perspectives, and encourages audiences to consider the human consequences of public policy and the importance of collective action in advancing justice and compassion.

Recently, she publicly recognized the work of @theyoungcenter The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, an organization dedicated to protecting the rights and well-being of unaccompanied and separated immigrant children. Through trained volunteers, attorneys, and social workers, the organization helps children navigate complex immigration proceedings, access legal protections, and obtain appropriate care and services. Its advocacy prioritizes children’s safety, best interests, due process, and family reunification while promoting a more humane and equitable immigration system.

I’m excited to share my artwork, “Us vs. Them,” inspired by “Ponder,” a poem by my friend Mark Haim, has been accepted into the “OH MY WORD” Art Show at Public Defender.
It is an honor to collaborate with someone whose life and work reflect a profound dedication to creating a more just, compassionate, and peaceful world.

In “Ponder”, Haim challenges the glorification of war while exposing society’s indifference to the suffering caused by violence. His words expose the illusion of division that allows violence to be justified, human lives to be reduced to statistics, and injustice to become something we learn to accept. Ultimately, Haim demands more than awareness—he calls for moral courage: the willingness to speak out, confront injustice, and refuse to remain passive while others suffer.

OH MY WORD is Public Defender’s curated exhibition exploring the varied roles language plays in art, featuring works engaged with text, language, voice, semiotics, signs, symbols, and words.
The exhibition will be on view in the Front Room at Public Defender from September 10 through October 18.

The Power of Art <3

Sunny was four when I developed postpartum depression.

Up until that point, our days together were spent with slow mornings, walks to the park, and neighborhood bike rides. We explored St. Louis and went on picnics. We made art, face-painted each other for fun, baked cookies, and jumped in puddles in the rain. We listened to music loudly and had regular dance parties. It was a privilege to take care of him. I was in awe of watching him be.

Depression settled into our lives, quietly and quickly. The mom he knew was ripped away.
The guilt of not being able to show up for him the way I always had was all-consuming. I grieved the life we had before. I grieved the mother I had been.

During this time, I relied heavily on music and discovered Andy Frasco & the U.N. Frasco speaks openly about depression and anxiety, helping to destigmatize these experiences while offering an underlying message of hope, resilience, self-love, and human connection. Through their lyrics, I felt seen and less alone.

Each day, I would put on a U.N. song, and we would dance together. During a time when existing felt hard and happiness was difficult to access, those few minutes became a way for me to reconnect with my kids and be fully present and joyful.

Sunny is now nine, and he saw the U.N. live for the first time at FloydFest. It was an emotional performance and a gift to walk beside him as he took in a community led by love, kindness, acceptance, hope, and peace—a place where everyone is welcome, everyone matters, and no one has to struggle alone. I watched as the songs that carried me through my darkest days became part of his happy childhood memories.

Research shows a clear link between a mother’s happiness and her child’s potential to thrive. I think about how my hardest seasons affected Sunny’s social and emotional development. Sunny saw his mom struggle—sad and empty—but he also saw her be brave and fight for her life and watched as his dad supported her with unconditional love. And those are gifts of gold.

Mourners dig graves for the children murdered in the February 28 strike on the Shajare Tayyiba elementary school in Minab, Iran.

Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School was struck by two missiles in rapid succession, killing at least 168 people, including 110 children. The majority of those murdered were children aged 7 to 12. The attack, which occurred during active school hours, resulted in the near-total destruction of parts of the building (“USA/Iran: Those Responsible”).

“The masters of war pretend not to know that it takes only a moment to destroy, yet often a lifetime is not enough to rebuild. They turn a blind eye to the fact that billions of dollars are spent on killing, on devastation, yet the resources needed for healing, education, and restoration are nowhere to be found. The world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants, yet it is held together by a multitude of supportive brothers and sisters” (Pope Leo XIV).
